babbletron
The babbletron is an interactive speech simulator built for Maker Faire. Using the record and play buttons, a user can construct a phrase by chaining allophones together and play them back to get an understanding on how basic synthetic speech works.
Allophones are basic constructs of speech (phonemes) that are encoded as voice parameters and blend from one to another over time to provide a smooth continuous speech pattern.
Using a foot pedal the user can change the pitch dynamically to have babbletron sing it playback as a song. A small 16x16 matrix display mouths the allophones as they play.
